Qing Emperor East Tour
2013-11-24
Venue: Nine-Room Hall
After the Qing Dynasty settled the capital in Beijing, Emperor Shunzhi looked into the distance to see his hometown and expressed his wish several times to “travel eastward” to offer sacrifices to his ancestors, but he did not make it due to various restrictions. His son, Emperor Kangxi, became the first one in the success of having an eastward inspection. In a course of 160 years, four emperors took ten trips back to Mukden where they held mausoleum sacrificial ceremonies. Compared with the southward or northward inspections, the eastward inspections of the emperors of the Qing Dynasty were of special significance, playing an important role in consolidating national unity, stabilizing the borders in southeast China, and improving Mukden’s political and cultural statuses.
